CAS volunteer drivers
log over 1.65 million kilometres
HAMILTON, January 8, 2003
Hamilton, ON -- They come from many
walks of life -- retirees, stay-at-home mothers, college and university
students -- but they share a common sense of purpose for children and youth who
need their help.
They are the seventy volunteer drivers for The
Children's Aid Society of Hamilton, who last year traveled 1.65 million
kilometres driving children who are in the care of the Society to their
appointments.
"That is the equivalent of traveling around the world 66
times or 460 times across Canada," says CAS Executive Director Dominic
Verticchio, who has done the math so many times.
In 2002, the program
averaged approximately 3,212 drives per month as volunteers transported
children to court ordered supervised visits, medical and other appointments, as
well as summer camp and some exceptional circumstance special education
programs.
"We would be unable to meet the needs of children in care
were it not for the dedication and support of our drive team," adds Mr.
Verticchio.
CAS volunteer drivers use their own vehicles and receive
.36 per kilometre driven.
All are subject to a variety of checks and
screenings including clearance by the police and Ministry of Transportation. As
well, the agency provides training in first-aid, CPR and car seat safety. New
recruits are now required to complete five drives with an experienced driver
before they are permitted to take on their first assignment.
Some
drivers donate a few hours each week or month while others donate a large part
of their leisure time to the program.
Volunteers play an important
role in the services provided by The Children's Aid Society of Hamilton. They
can get involved in a wide range of services with the Society, which tries to
fit volunteer assignments with the skills, interests, and available time of
each volunteer.
Some develop supportive relationships with children and
families by becoming special friends or tutors. Others participate in
children's groups, take part in ongoing programs or assist at special events
that benefit both children and their parents.
"Once candidates have
completed the required training, there are volunteer opportunities available
for whatever time commitment they're able to give," says Mr.
Verticchio.
