Young Parent Wrap Program -
To help mitigate Homelessness in Hamilton

HAMILTON, April 19, 2002

The Young ParentWrap Program is a pilot program offered by The Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton (CAS) and five partner agencies – Citizen Action Group, Community Adolescent Network, Grace Haven, St. Martin’s Manor and Victorian Order of Nurses.

Funded under the Human Resources Development’s National Homelessness Initiative, the program provides pregnant teens and teen parents with access to various services to help them break the cycle of poverty and dependence. The services include housing support; parenting and life skills; social skills, education and literacy; job training and employment, among many other services.

Roles of the Partners
The six agencies are using their services to target assistance to young families.

Children’s Aid Society of Hamilton
Parent Support Workers from the CAS teach and assist young mothers to provide a safe and nurturing environment for infants and children in their own homes; and for children, who are in care, the Parent Support Worker facilitates reintegration into the home.

Community Adolescent Network
The Community Adolescent Network is networking with landlords to increase the pool of appropriate housing for young mothers and educates them on the roles and responsibilities of landlords and tenants.

Grace Haven and St. Martin’s Manor
Grace Haven and St. Martins Manor provides child care and respite of children to allow young mothers to access community and family support programs and to provide time for young mothers to attend training courses and job interviews.

Victorian Order of Nurses
Through a purchase of service agreement, the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) provides comprehensive health assessments to both young mothers and their children. The VON also provides parent/infant support and transportation to physicians and other health related appointments.

Citizen Action Group
Citizen Action Group provides group and individuals with a full array of employment related services including assessments for training and employment.
